Scotts Bluff

Another landmark along the way -- Scotts Bluff, rising almost 900 feet above the
prairie. There was one way through for the wagons.

Scotts Bluff from up on top. There's a road leading from the Visitor Center to the top of the bluff -- much easier
than what the pioneers faced trying to get their wagons through. |

Not far from Scotts Bluff -- the site of "The Great Smoke." This was a gathering of the Plains Indian tribes in 1861. Estimates are that between 8,000
and 12,000 of the Plains natives gathered here near Horse Creek, looking for peace (however short-lived it turned out to be). |
